About us
A community of hope, recovery and positive change
UNHOOKED Movement is a Zimbabwean mental health and addiction prevention organization committed to preventing addiction, promoting mental well-being, and supporting lasting recovery. We work with individuals, families, schools, workplaces, communities, and institutions to address the growing challenges of gambling-related harm, behavioural addictions, substance use disorders, and mental health conditions.
Who we are
Our approach is grounded in evidence-based practice, combining prevention, education, psychological services, research, advocacy, and community engagement. We believe that recovery is possible and that every individual deserves access to compassionate, professional, and stigma-free support.
Through counselling, psychotherapy, psychological assessments, peer support programmes, public awareness campaigns, training, and workplace wellness initiatives, we empower people to make informed choices, build resilience, and achieve sustainable recovery. We also collaborate with government agencies, educational institutions, healthcare providers, civil society organisations, and the private sector to strengthen mental health and addiction services across Zimbabwe.
At UNHOOKED Movement, we envision a society where individuals and communities are free from the harmful effects of addiction and where mental health is recognised as a fundamental part of overall well-being. Our commitment is to inspire hope, restore lives, and create healthier, more resilient communities through prevention, treatment, research, advocacy, and partnership.
Our foundation
Mission and vision
Our mission
To prevent addiction, promote mental health, provide quality psychological support, and empower individuals and communities to achieve lasting recovery and well-being.
Our vision
To create a society where individuals, families, and communities are empowered to live free from addiction and enjoy optimal mental health and psychological well-being.
How it began
Our story
UNHOOKED Movement was founded in response to the growing impact of addiction and mental health challenges on individuals, families, and communities. We recognised that many people struggling with gambling addiction, substance use, and other behavioural addictions often faced stigma, limited access to professional support, and little hope for recovery.
The vision for UNHOOKED Movement was also shaped by the personal journey of its founder, who experienced and overcame years of gambling addiction. Having witnessed the emotional, financial, and social impact of addiction firsthand, the founder transformed that experience into a lifelong commitment to helping others find hope, recovery, and a new beginning.
Driven by the belief that recovery is possible, UNHOOKED Movement was established to provide education, prevention, psychological support, and evidence-based interventions that empower people to rebuild their lives. What began as a commitment to help individuals affected by gambling addiction has grown into a broader movement dedicated to promoting mental health, preventing addiction, and strengthening the well-being of communities.
Today, UNHOOKED Movement works with schools, workplaces, families, community organisations, and institutions to raise awareness, provide counselling and psychotherapy, facilitate recovery programmes, conduct research, advocate for better policies, and train professionals and community leaders. Our work is guided by compassion, integrity, professionalism, and the belief that every person deserves the opportunity to heal and thrive.
At UNHOOKED Movement, we are more than an organisation, we are a community of hope, recovery, and positive change. Together, we are breaking the cycle of addiction, restoring lives, and building healthier communities for future generations.
